1
00:00:05,483 --> 00:00:08,138
There wasn't a lot that shook
me as an investigator,
2
00:00:08,225 --> 00:00:12,924
but this case
truly broke my heart.
3
00:00:12,925 --> 00:00:14,492
Yeah.
4
00:00:14,579 --> 00:00:17,756
The victims,
they were tied, bound,
5
00:00:17,843 --> 00:00:20,020
knife lacerations to the neck...
6
00:00:22,326 --> 00:00:24,328
...severe-force strangulation.
7
00:00:30,073 --> 00:00:31,857
He would pull people
over in parking lots
8
00:00:31,988 --> 00:00:33,816
saying he was a model scout.
9
00:00:33,946 --> 00:00:36,471
He would sweet-talk them
to get out of their car.
10
00:00:36,558 --> 00:00:38,081
He could take pictures of them.
11
00:00:38,212 --> 00:00:41,041
He fine-tuned his craft
over the years.
12
00:00:45,958 --> 00:00:48,396
All these victims
came out of the woodwork.
13
00:00:51,790 --> 00:00:55,664
No remorse,
no regard for human life.
14
00:00:57,753 --> 00:00:59,884
It was all-hands-on-deck.
15
00:00:59,885 --> 00:01:01,626
That clock was ticking.
16
00:01:01,713 --> 00:01:04,412
So the only thing
that mattered was finding him.
17
00:01:20,602 --> 00:01:21,951
Richmond County, Georgia,
18
00:01:22,082 --> 00:01:23,821
sits right on
the Savannah River.
19
00:01:23,822 --> 00:01:25,433
A lot of small communities
around,
20
00:01:25,520 --> 00:01:28,392
and it has a good hometown
feel to it.
21
00:01:29,480 --> 00:01:32,135
It's sometimes called
the Augusta-Aiken area,
22
00:01:32,222 --> 00:01:34,050
right on the border
with South Carolina
23
00:01:34,137 --> 00:01:37,097
and, uh, just very well known
for the Masters golf tournament
24
00:01:37,227 --> 00:01:39,751
and Fort Gordon,
a big Army base.
25
00:01:45,192 --> 00:01:47,237
On September 5th of 2000,
26
00:01:47,324 --> 00:01:49,325
the Sheriff's Department
was contacted
27
00:01:49,326 --> 00:01:52,155
by a superior officer
at Fort Gordon
28
00:01:52,286 --> 00:01:54,288
concerned about
one of his soldiers
29
00:01:54,418 --> 00:01:55,985
that had not shown up for work.
30
00:02:07,127 --> 00:02:08,780
Marni Glista lived off-base.
31
00:02:08,867 --> 00:02:12,000
She was a 21-year-old
army sergeant.
32
00:02:12,001 --> 00:02:14,481
Her husband was also
in the military,
33
00:02:14,482 --> 00:02:16,700
and he was in Kuwait at the time
34
00:02:16,701 --> 00:02:20,140
and, uh, called multiple times
and could not get ahold of her.
35
00:02:30,672 --> 00:02:33,065
Our deputies responded
to the scene
36
00:02:33,153 --> 00:02:37,069
and they found Marni Glista
laying on the bedroom floor.
37
00:02:37,244 --> 00:02:38,506
She was nude.
38
00:02:39,942 --> 00:02:41,422
Her hands were bound,
39
00:02:41,596 --> 00:02:44,686
and she had something
wrapped around her throat.
40
00:02:46,078 --> 00:02:48,472
She had clearly
been strangulated
41
00:02:48,559 --> 00:02:50,735
and she had obviously
been beaten...
42
00:02:51,780 --> 00:02:54,999
...but still had a pulse
and some shallow breathing.
43
00:02:55,000 --> 00:02:59,048
Immediately, they transported
her to the hospital.
44
00:03:01,355 --> 00:03:04,836
When I got to the scene,
the door was unlocked,
45
00:03:04,923 --> 00:03:07,535
all her I.D.,
her money in her purse,
46
00:03:07,622 --> 00:03:09,450
valuables are still
in the residence.
47
00:03:09,537 --> 00:03:11,408
It's not like it was a burglary.
48
00:03:11,495 --> 00:03:15,020
Did she know them?
Did she let them in?
49
00:03:15,107 --> 00:03:18,459
Did somebody make her
open that door?
50
00:03:18,546 --> 00:03:20,155
Either way, it was obvious
51
00:03:20,156 --> 00:03:23,376
that there had been
a lengthy struggle
52
00:03:23,377 --> 00:03:26,162
where she had clearly
fought back.
53
00:03:27,381 --> 00:03:30,165
Outside of her residence,
54
00:03:30,166 --> 00:03:32,341
there were groceries
still in the car.
55
00:03:32,342 --> 00:03:35,432
My thoughts were
somebody probably knew her,
56
00:03:35,606 --> 00:03:38,217
came to the door
before she even was able
57
00:03:38,218 --> 00:03:41,264
to get her groceries out,
having a conversation,
58
00:03:41,351 --> 00:03:44,006
and then something happened
inside the home.
59
00:03:45,007 --> 00:03:48,052
We found a receipt
from the day before.
60
00:03:48,053 --> 00:03:51,970
5:00 after work, she stopped
and got some groceries
61
00:03:52,057 --> 00:03:54,146
less than a mile down the road.
62
00:03:54,234 --> 00:03:57,106
So we had an investigator
go to the supermarket.
63
00:03:58,238 --> 00:04:01,980
One of the clerks remembered
Marni coming through her line,
64
00:04:02,067 --> 00:04:03,808
but they didn't have any video,
65
00:04:03,939 --> 00:04:06,246
and they didn't remember
anybody suspicious.
66
00:04:09,858 --> 00:04:13,078
The crime-scene technicians
collected a lot of evidence
67
00:04:13,209 --> 00:04:15,124
to work it from a DNA angle.
68
00:04:16,081 --> 00:04:18,954
But at the time, we
just didn't have much to go on.
69
00:04:19,998 --> 00:04:22,435
We were hoping
that maybe Marni might recover
70
00:04:22,436 --> 00:04:23,872
and give us something.
71
00:04:27,179 --> 00:04:30,051
September 5th,
the phone call came in
72
00:04:30,052 --> 00:04:32,924
that Marni had been attacked
in her home
73
00:04:33,098 --> 00:04:35,927
and was in critical condition.
74
00:04:37,233 --> 00:04:40,279
Tears immediately flowed, fear.
75
00:04:40,280 --> 00:04:44,588
It was a scary time of--
and a lot of unknowns.
76
00:04:46,764 --> 00:04:51,246
My sister Marni,
she lived life
77
00:04:51,247 --> 00:04:53,510
at 100 miles an hour
with her hair on fire.
78
00:04:55,425 --> 00:04:56,861
She's a graduate, alright.
79
00:04:56,992 --> 00:04:59,428
She was a very good
people person.
80
00:04:59,429 --> 00:05:01,779
She knew how to get
what she wanted in life.
81
00:05:02,824 --> 00:05:04,434
She was always up
82
00:05:04,565 --> 00:05:05,783
for the next adventure.
83
00:05:11,267 --> 00:05:13,095
Wendy and I flew to Georgia.
84
00:05:14,052 --> 00:05:15,532
We went into the room.
85
00:05:15,663 --> 00:05:18,143
Then my parents gave us the news
that...
86
00:05:21,321 --> 00:05:22,757
...that we're going
to say goodbye.
87
00:05:25,150 --> 00:05:28,762
Her husband, Jason,
had made it back from Kuwait.
88
00:05:28,763 --> 00:05:30,939
He was distraught.
89
00:05:31,069 --> 00:05:33,071
He was in pieces.
90
00:05:33,158 --> 00:05:36,422
We were told the brain damage
was irreversible.
91
00:05:41,819 --> 00:05:44,431
So we stayed there all night
92
00:05:44,561 --> 00:05:45,823
and, um...
93
00:05:47,042 --> 00:05:49,000
...we all said goodbye to her.
94
00:05:57,269 --> 00:05:58,445
This was big news.
95
00:05:59,533 --> 00:06:01,795
We were reporting on the shock
and also the fear
96
00:06:01,796 --> 00:06:03,450
that this created
with the neighbors.
97
00:06:03,537 --> 00:06:05,452
Who would have done this attack?
98
00:06:05,539 --> 00:06:07,323
Is there somebody on the loose?
99
00:06:09,107 --> 00:06:10,804
The autopsy came back,
and we learned
100
00:06:10,805 --> 00:06:14,198
that she was actually
sexually assaulted.
101
00:06:14,199 --> 00:06:17,551
But, unfortunately,
there was no DNA from the scene
102
00:06:17,681 --> 00:06:19,291
that was able to assist us.
103
00:06:20,336 --> 00:06:24,252
They ultimately determined
that there was a strangulation,
104
00:06:24,253 --> 00:06:29,345
and she was beat so bad that
she had massive brain swelling
105
00:06:29,519 --> 00:06:31,260
that led to her death.
106
00:06:32,174 --> 00:06:36,612
The strangulation method,
unlike stabbing, it's slow.
107
00:06:36,613 --> 00:06:38,789
It's such
an intimate experience.
108
00:06:38,876 --> 00:06:41,139
For killers in general
that are sexually driven,
109
00:06:41,226 --> 00:06:42,576
those are the types of things
110
00:06:42,663 --> 00:06:44,186
that could become very erotic
to people
111
00:06:44,316 --> 00:06:46,144
and create this powerful,
112
00:06:46,275 --> 00:06:49,625
incredibly powerful
base experience
113
00:06:49,626 --> 00:06:51,411
enjoying the suffering
of others.
114
00:06:54,196 --> 00:06:56,416
We were thinking,
with the door being unlocked,
115
00:06:56,503 --> 00:06:58,548
this has got to be somebody
she knew,
116
00:06:58,722 --> 00:07:01,333
somebody who knew that
the husband was out of town.
117
00:07:01,421 --> 00:07:03,945
Was somebody stalking her?
118
00:07:04,032 --> 00:07:06,904
Was there a lover?
Was there a love triangle?
119
00:07:07,949 --> 00:07:10,907
As an investigator,
you have to very systematically
120
00:07:10,908 --> 00:07:14,476
work through each one
of those possible scenarios
121
00:07:14,477 --> 00:07:17,611
until you start
developing leads.
122
00:07:19,395 --> 00:07:21,832
We interviewed
the post commander
123
00:07:22,006 --> 00:07:25,793
and the whole battalion,
almost 100 people.
124
00:07:25,880 --> 00:07:28,360
We were constantly talking
to the family
125
00:07:28,448 --> 00:07:30,754
and we talked to their friends,
126
00:07:30,841 --> 00:07:34,236
but we didn't find
any suspects at the time.
127
00:07:34,323 --> 00:07:36,238
There was a lot
of frustration.
128
00:07:36,368 --> 00:07:38,980
It was just--
There was nothing there.
129
00:07:40,285 --> 00:07:44,899
We started thinking, did
we have just a random killing?
130
00:07:47,467 --> 00:07:49,904
We're looking for
other cases in Richmond County
131
00:07:49,991 --> 00:07:51,731
to see if there are connections.
132
00:07:51,732 --> 00:07:55,866
But we didn't have
any similar crimes.
133
00:07:55,997 --> 00:07:57,693
So we all talked
to other counties
134
00:07:57,694 --> 00:08:00,349
to see if they've had
any similar incidents.
135
00:08:01,350 --> 00:08:05,093
I was the chief deputy at the
Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
136
00:08:05,180 --> 00:08:08,052
We were only separated
from Richmond County
137
00:08:08,139 --> 00:08:10,446
by the Savannah River.
138
00:08:10,533 --> 00:08:12,927
We are truly
next-door neighbors,
139
00:08:13,057 --> 00:08:16,147
and we had a case
that had some things in common.
140
00:08:18,802 --> 00:08:23,764
In December of '99, we received
a missing-persons report.
141
00:08:23,851 --> 00:08:25,766
18-year-old
Josh Wilson worked a long day
142
00:08:25,853 --> 00:08:27,115
and had fallen asleep.
143
00:08:27,245 --> 00:08:28,942
His wife, Tiffaney Wilson,
144
00:08:28,943 --> 00:08:30,857
was supposed
to be taking their 2-month-old
145
00:08:30,858 --> 00:08:33,991
to see Santa at the Winn-Dixie
and never came home.
146
00:08:35,036 --> 00:08:36,993
We went to the store.
147
00:08:36,994 --> 00:08:39,606
Tiffaney Wilson's vehicle
was in the parking lot.
148
00:08:40,694 --> 00:08:44,262
There was no surveillance video.
We interviewed the clerks.
149
00:08:45,394 --> 00:08:48,876
Tiffaney was nowhere to be
found, and neither is the baby.
150
00:08:48,963 --> 00:08:50,051
Where is the baby?
151
00:08:51,661 --> 00:08:53,576
While that wheel is turning,
152
00:08:53,750 --> 00:08:56,578
we get a call
from Richmond County.
153
00:08:56,579 --> 00:08:58,972
A 2-month-old baby
was recovered
154
00:08:58,973 --> 00:09:02,629
at the Georgia Welcome Center
along I-20,
155
00:09:02,716 --> 00:09:04,892
six miles down the road.
156
00:09:06,546 --> 00:09:10,550
They found the baby
in a car seat, just abandoned.
157
00:09:14,336 --> 00:09:15,729
Two days into this,
158
00:09:15,816 --> 00:09:18,949
an auto-parts attendant
dumping the trash
159
00:09:19,123 --> 00:09:22,083
saw female clothing,
uh, in a dumpster.
160
00:09:26,217 --> 00:09:30,090
The dumpster was down the street
from the grocery store
161
00:09:30,091 --> 00:09:32,136
where her car was found.
162
00:09:32,267 --> 00:09:34,834
We did have
a clothing description.
163
00:09:34,835 --> 00:09:36,966
We knew her size.
164
00:09:36,967 --> 00:09:39,274
It was
Tiffaney Wilson's clothes.
165
00:09:42,190 --> 00:09:43,756
In any missing-person,
166
00:09:43,757 --> 00:09:45,541
you have to treat it
as a homicide
167
00:09:45,628 --> 00:09:47,761
until the evidence tells
you different.
168
00:09:47,848 --> 00:09:50,546
There was a lot of suspicion
on Josh, her husband.
169
00:09:51,634 --> 00:09:55,507
Through several interviews,
through a lot of shoe leather,
170
00:09:55,595 --> 00:09:57,858
uh, w-we eliminated him
completely.
171
00:10:01,775 --> 00:10:05,039
Three weeks later,
at the end of December 1999,
172
00:10:05,126 --> 00:10:07,736
hunters found the body
of a woman deep in the woods
173
00:10:07,737 --> 00:10:09,696
in, uh, rural Aiken County.
174
00:10:10,740 --> 00:10:12,132
She was totally nude.
175
00:10:12,133 --> 00:10:14,222
Her hands were bound
behind her back.
176
00:10:15,397 --> 00:10:17,920
There was knife lacerations
to the neck,
177
00:10:17,921 --> 00:10:21,229
severe-force strangulation.
178
00:10:21,316 --> 00:10:23,144
She had been beaten brutally...
179
00:10:24,362 --> 00:10:26,581
...and we learned
from the coroner's office
180
00:10:26,582 --> 00:10:28,497
she was sexually assaulted.
181
00:10:31,805 --> 00:10:33,589
We knew it was Tiffaney Wilson.
182
00:10:35,635 --> 00:10:39,028
The way she was tied, stabbed,
and beaten so brutally,
183
00:10:39,029 --> 00:10:41,466
I don't see that
as somebody she knew.
184
00:10:41,553 --> 00:10:44,338
I absolutely think
it was a stranger.
185
00:10:44,339 --> 00:10:47,255
Got absolutely no leads
whatsoever.
186
00:10:47,342 --> 00:10:51,651
We truly had nothing to go on...
187
00:10:53,740 --> 00:10:58,658
...until Richmond County gave us
a call about the Glista case.
188
00:11:00,137 --> 00:11:02,878
That's two victims
who had been sexually assaulted,
189
00:11:02,879 --> 00:11:06,274
had been strangulated,
bound, murdered,
190
00:11:06,404 --> 00:11:08,972
and very similar in age.
191
00:11:09,059 --> 00:11:11,105
And so
then we started thinking
192
00:11:11,192 --> 00:11:14,935
that's a possibility
that these could be connected.
193
00:11:17,502 --> 00:11:19,504
And then, on October 10th...
194
00:11:20,462 --> 00:11:23,334
...Richmond County gets
another 911 call.
195
00:11:29,601 --> 00:11:31,951
A young woman,
she's been attacked in her home
196
00:11:31,952 --> 00:11:34,693
by a man who had stabbed her
in the neck.
197
00:11:34,694 --> 00:11:37,827
It could have been
the same person was responsible,
198
00:11:37,914 --> 00:11:41,177
and now we had a victim
who was alive.
199
00:11:45,356 --> 00:11:48,664
We know
serial killers don't stop.
200
00:11:48,751 --> 00:11:51,972
This was the leading story on
every TV news station in town.
201
00:11:52,059 --> 00:11:54,061
The sketch was run everywhere.
202
00:11:54,191 --> 00:11:55,758
He picks up a picture.
He goes,
203
00:11:55,932 --> 00:11:58,848
"I think this is
who you're looking for."
204
00:11:58,935 --> 00:12:02,591
It was uncanny
how they looked alike.
205
00:12:08,684 --> 00:12:12,775
In 1999 and 2000,
we've got two girls,
206
00:12:12,862 --> 00:12:15,735
Marni Glista
and Tiffaney Wilson,
207
00:12:15,865 --> 00:12:18,562
that are murdered
in two different states.
208
00:12:18,563 --> 00:12:20,783
But there were
some similarities.
209
00:12:20,870 --> 00:12:22,219
They were both bound,
210
00:12:22,306 --> 00:12:23,960
they'd both been
brutally beaten,
211
00:12:24,047 --> 00:12:26,093
and they had both
been sexually assaulted.
212
00:12:27,137 --> 00:12:29,574
They had, at that point,
no leads.
213
00:12:29,705 --> 00:12:32,273
They had no idea
who had done this
214
00:12:32,360 --> 00:12:34,710
or why anybody would do this.
215
00:12:36,407 --> 00:12:40,760
And then one month
after Marni Glista was murdered,
216
00:12:40,890 --> 00:12:44,067
the Richmond County Sheriff's
Office received a 911 call.
217
00:12:55,862 --> 00:12:57,820
They dispatched deputies
to the scene
218
00:12:57,907 --> 00:13:02,041
and found Chrisilee Barton,
18 years old at the time,
219
00:13:02,042 --> 00:13:03,783
with her throat slashed.
220
00:13:05,654 --> 00:13:08,091
She had been raped,
and she had been beaten.
221
00:13:09,484 --> 00:13:11,921
She could barely talk,
and it was just chilling.
222
00:13:12,922 --> 00:13:15,490
Even though
she was in dire straits,
223
00:13:15,577 --> 00:13:17,709
Chrisilee Barton wanted to
give us some information
224
00:13:17,797 --> 00:13:19,276
about her assailant...
225
00:13:20,800 --> 00:13:22,801
...but her condition
was critical,
226
00:13:22,802 --> 00:13:26,282
and so, first, they rushed her
off to the hospital.
227
00:13:31,723 --> 00:13:35,423
Investigators started
canvassing the neighborhoods,
228
00:13:35,510 --> 00:13:37,425
and we got a lead.
229
00:13:37,512 --> 00:13:41,516
A neighbor had noticed
a teal green Honda Civic
230
00:13:41,646 --> 00:13:43,605
leaving Chrisilee's house,
231
00:13:43,735 --> 00:13:46,173
and it had a very distinct
paper tag.
232
00:13:47,261 --> 00:13:48,957
When you buy a vehicle
233
00:13:48,958 --> 00:13:51,047
before you have
your actual license plate,
234
00:13:51,178 --> 00:13:53,049
you have a paper tag.
235
00:13:54,137 --> 00:13:56,835
This car had been purchased
in the last 30 days
236
00:13:56,836 --> 00:13:59,229
'cause that's typically how long
a paper tag's good for.
237
00:13:59,316 --> 00:14:01,188
So there were a couple
of dealerships
238
00:14:01,275 --> 00:14:03,016
that needed to get spoken to.
239
00:14:05,148 --> 00:14:07,020
And so,
while we're doing that,
240
00:14:07,107 --> 00:14:09,022
we got a call from the hospital.
241
00:14:15,593 --> 00:14:17,769
Chrisilee Barton became
stable enough
242
00:14:17,857 --> 00:14:19,946
to have dialogue
with the investigators.
243
00:14:22,600 --> 00:14:26,517
She had some damage
to her Esophagus and throat,
244
00:14:26,604 --> 00:14:29,738
but she was able to relay
information about her attacker.
245
00:14:31,783 --> 00:14:34,047
She was on her way home
from work.
246
00:14:34,134 --> 00:14:36,179
She pulled up at a stoplight.
247
00:14:36,266 --> 00:14:39,921
A Hispanic male
in a green Honda Civic
248
00:14:39,922 --> 00:14:43,490
pulled up next to her and began
having conversation with her.
249
00:14:43,491 --> 00:14:45,797
She said he was
just asking for directions.
250
00:14:45,885 --> 00:14:47,799
The light changes,
so he motioned
251
00:14:47,887 --> 00:14:50,890
for her to pull over into
the parking lot next to them.
252
00:14:51,064 --> 00:14:55,590
Then he started telling her
that he was new to the area,
253
00:14:55,677 --> 00:14:58,767
he was a modeling agent
254
00:14:58,854 --> 00:15:01,901
and looking to take
photographs of women.
255
00:15:01,988 --> 00:15:04,598
He's willing to pay her $200
256
00:15:04,599 --> 00:15:06,513
in exchange
for taking these pictures
257
00:15:06,514 --> 00:15:08,124
for his modeling agency.
258
00:15:08,255 --> 00:15:09,865
He seems intelligent.
259
00:15:09,952 --> 00:15:13,086
He's very likable
and-- and easy to talk to.
260
00:15:14,696 --> 00:15:17,525
People that are psychopaths
oftentimes are--
261
00:15:17,612 --> 00:15:21,964
are quite skilled and adept
at social skills.
262
00:15:22,138 --> 00:15:24,749
They find ways
to manipulate and twist
263
00:15:24,836 --> 00:15:26,316
how people see them externally
264
00:15:26,447 --> 00:15:27,927
so that they can get
what they want.
265
00:15:30,059 --> 00:15:33,497
Chrisilee told him
to follow her home.
266
00:15:33,584 --> 00:15:35,542
She had second thoughts
about it,
267
00:15:35,543 --> 00:15:38,938
but she ended up going home
with him anyway.
268
00:15:41,288 --> 00:15:44,378
She was changing into something
for the photographs,
269
00:15:44,465 --> 00:15:47,381
and she could hear rustling
in her kitchen.
270
00:15:49,644 --> 00:15:52,473
And then he came out
with a knife.
271
00:15:52,560 --> 00:15:54,561
He stabbed her in the neck.
272
00:15:54,562 --> 00:15:58,782
That led to him raping her,
beating her.
273
00:15:58,783 --> 00:16:01,569
She loses consciousness
for a brief period of time.
274
00:16:01,656 --> 00:16:04,311
At that point,
he left her for dead and fled.
275
00:16:07,053 --> 00:16:08,837
But this woman was a fighter.
276
00:16:11,100 --> 00:16:12,972
Waking up from
her unconsciousness,
277
00:16:13,059 --> 00:16:14,625
she crawled to the telephone
278
00:16:14,712 --> 00:16:17,585
and was able to dial 911
and get help.
279
00:16:20,109 --> 00:16:22,459
The Marni Glista case is fresh
in everyone's minds.
280
00:16:22,590 --> 00:16:24,722
They had this case
of Tiffaney Wilson.
281
00:16:24,809 --> 00:16:27,550
They have a new case
of Chrisilee Barton.
282
00:16:27,551 --> 00:16:29,640
Is this connected?
283
00:16:29,771 --> 00:16:33,253
All three had been brutally
beaten and sexually assaulted.
284
00:16:34,471 --> 00:16:38,954
There are similarities
in terms of where these victims,
285
00:16:39,085 --> 00:16:42,958
specifically Marni and Tiffaney,
were last seen--
286
00:16:43,045 --> 00:16:44,177
at a grocery store.
287
00:16:45,221 --> 00:16:47,223
Tiffaney was stabbed
in the manner
288
00:16:47,310 --> 00:16:49,486
that Chrisilee Barton
was stabbed.
289
00:16:49,573 --> 00:16:54,361
Chrisilee and Marni both
had been attacked in their home.
290
00:16:56,232 --> 00:16:59,060
We think we have
a common suspect
291
00:16:59,061 --> 00:17:01,890
and we could be looking for
a serial killer.
292
00:17:07,417 --> 00:17:11,291
We called the forensic artist
to come to the hospital.
293
00:17:11,378 --> 00:17:14,990
Chrisilee Barton again gave
great information.
294
00:17:15,121 --> 00:17:18,384
They spent several hours
together and in the end,
295
00:17:18,385 --> 00:17:22,041
we were able to put
this composite drawing together,
296
00:17:23,607 --> 00:17:26,262
the Richmond County Sheriff's
Department supervisor said,
297
00:17:26,349 --> 00:17:28,351
"We're running this on the news
at 6:00.
298
00:17:28,482 --> 00:17:29,831
Hold on to your socks
299
00:17:29,918 --> 00:17:32,225
because we're expecting
a lot of phone calls."
300
00:17:34,009 --> 00:17:35,271
The sketch was run
everywhere,
301
00:17:35,358 --> 00:17:37,752
along with the details
on the car.
302
00:17:37,882 --> 00:17:40,623
He raped, sodomized,
and stabbed this young woman,
303
00:17:40,624 --> 00:17:41,886
Chrisilee Barton.
304
00:17:41,973 --> 00:17:43,279
Many tips were coming in,
305
00:17:43,453 --> 00:17:45,281
both in Georgia
and in South Carolina,
306
00:17:45,368 --> 00:17:47,283
and we were all
running them down.
307
00:17:47,370 --> 00:17:49,329
And then we get
this one phone call
308
00:17:49,416 --> 00:17:52,592
from somebody claiming to be
a family member of this suspect
309
00:17:52,593 --> 00:17:55,291
that we've put on TV,
and he says,
310
00:17:55,378 --> 00:17:57,685
"He's married
to my sister-in-law."
311
00:18:06,041 --> 00:18:09,349
Once the composite sketch
of this suspect is on the news,
312
00:18:09,479 --> 00:18:13,003
we get this one phone call
from a family member.
313
00:18:13,004 --> 00:18:16,529
He explains to me
that his wife has a sister
314
00:18:16,530 --> 00:18:19,402
who is married to this guy
in the sketch.
315
00:18:20,403 --> 00:18:22,362
And this gentleman knew
316
00:18:22,449 --> 00:18:25,452
that he recently bought
a teal green Honda.
317
00:18:25,539 --> 00:18:27,367
Time was of the essence.
318
00:18:27,497 --> 00:18:29,847
We couldn't send pictures
via phone back then,
319
00:18:29,934 --> 00:18:32,633
so I said,
"I'm heading your way."
320
00:18:34,461 --> 00:18:36,637
So I pull up in his driveway.
321
00:18:36,767 --> 00:18:38,943
The husband says,
"Come on in."
322
00:18:39,074 --> 00:18:40,815
He picks up a picture.
He goes,
323
00:18:40,902 --> 00:18:42,556
"I think this is who
you're looking for."
324
00:18:44,471 --> 00:18:47,778
I looked back at the sketch
of this suspect.
325
00:18:50,607 --> 00:18:52,173
I mean, I had--
I had chill bumps.
326
00:18:52,174 --> 00:18:53,262
It was...
327
00:18:54,263 --> 00:18:55,873
...uncanny...
328
00:18:55,960 --> 00:18:57,832
how they looked alike.
329
00:19:01,401 --> 00:19:03,446
The family called him Ray,
330
00:19:03,533 --> 00:19:06,754
but clarified that his
full name was Reinaldo Rivera.
331
00:19:08,147 --> 00:19:10,671
Immediately, I called
our supervisor, and I said,
332
00:19:10,758 --> 00:19:12,934
"I've got a picture
y'all need to see,
333
00:19:13,021 --> 00:19:16,372
and get it in front
of Chrisilee Barton."
334
00:19:16,503 --> 00:19:19,505
Investigators went to
the hospital.
335
00:19:19,506 --> 00:19:21,985
Right off the bat,
Chrisilee Barton,
336
00:19:21,986 --> 00:19:24,119
she was able
to identify him.
337
00:19:25,468 --> 00:19:27,644
Once we got a positive I.D.,
338
00:19:27,775 --> 00:19:29,777
we immediately had
an address for him,
339
00:19:29,864 --> 00:19:33,346
which was in South Carolina
just across the bridge.
340
00:19:33,476 --> 00:19:35,129
It was out of our jurisdiction,
341
00:19:35,130 --> 00:19:39,352
so we contacted the Aiken
County Sheriff's Department.
342
00:19:39,482 --> 00:19:43,356
So from that, we and Richmond
County worked hand-in-hand.
343
00:19:46,620 --> 00:19:50,711
We descended upon the residence
of Reinaldo Rivera,
344
00:19:52,365 --> 00:19:56,064
The green vehicle's there.
It's got the paper tag.
345
00:19:56,151 --> 00:20:00,634
And we're met by the wife
of Reinaldo Rivera.
346
00:20:02,288 --> 00:20:04,854
The wife tells them
Reinaldo sped off,
347
00:20:04,855 --> 00:20:07,075
driving a white Windstar van.
348
00:20:07,206 --> 00:20:08,990
So now he's in the wind.
349
00:20:10,731 --> 00:20:12,863
They had seen the news
at 6:00.
350
00:20:12,950 --> 00:20:18,869
He knows now, and he has left
in his wife's minivan.
351
00:20:18,956 --> 00:20:21,654
She was clearly in shock,
352
00:20:21,655 --> 00:20:24,092
but she understood the gravity
of what was going on
353
00:20:24,179 --> 00:20:26,050
and wanted to help.
354
00:20:26,137 --> 00:20:28,444
We put out a lookout
for this vehicle.
355
00:20:28,531 --> 00:20:29,924
We've got a tag number.
356
00:20:30,054 --> 00:20:31,620
We've got a description
of the van.
357
00:20:31,621 --> 00:20:34,362
We've got-- We've got
a last known direction.
358
00:20:34,363 --> 00:20:37,105
I mean, there's literally
tire marks through the yard.
359
00:20:38,759 --> 00:20:41,587
We just started
talking to Mrs. Rivera
360
00:20:41,588 --> 00:20:46,462
to gather as much information
as we could about her husband.
361
00:20:46,549 --> 00:20:49,639
Reinaldo Rivera was born
in 1963.
362
00:20:49,726 --> 00:20:52,903
He grew up in Puerto Rico.
His father was a doctor.
363
00:20:53,034 --> 00:20:57,820
He ended up enlisted in the Navy
and had a stellar career.
364
00:20:57,821 --> 00:21:00,214
He was a military man
who had actually worked
365
00:21:00,215 --> 00:21:02,783
for the Joint Chiefs of Staff
in Washington, D.C.
366
00:21:04,437 --> 00:21:06,830
after that,
in the, uh, early 1990s,
367
00:21:06,961 --> 00:21:09,180
Reinaldo went to
University of South Carolina,
368
00:21:09,268 --> 00:21:10,790
where he met his wife.
369
00:21:10,791 --> 00:21:13,707
They married
Valentine's Day 1993.
370
00:21:16,275 --> 00:21:19,016
At that time,
he was elected to go to
371
00:21:19,147 --> 00:21:22,584
the Naval Academy flight school
in Texas
372
00:21:22,585 --> 00:21:25,022
to become a Navy pilot.
373
00:21:25,109 --> 00:21:26,720
When he was in flight school,
374
00:21:26,807 --> 00:21:30,158
they found that
he was videotaping young ladies
375
00:21:30,245 --> 00:21:33,291
in sexually compromising
situation,
376
00:21:33,292 --> 00:21:35,597
and that he had a relationship
with one of the ladies.
377
00:21:35,598 --> 00:21:38,558
They got him out--
less-than-honorable discharge.
378
00:21:38,645 --> 00:21:40,516
And so he left the Navy.
379
00:21:41,604 --> 00:21:43,911
They decided to settle
in South Carolina,
380
00:21:44,041 --> 00:21:46,435
where he ended up getting
a job with a dealership.
381
00:21:48,611 --> 00:21:52,136
According to Mrs. Rivera,
in, uh, August of '98,
382
00:21:52,223 --> 00:21:55,008
after working
at two car dealerships,
383
00:21:55,009 --> 00:21:57,793
he lands a very good job
at Bridgestone
384
00:21:57,794 --> 00:21:59,926
there in Aiken County.
385
00:21:59,927 --> 00:22:01,581
And so here you've got
his wife thinking
386
00:22:01,668 --> 00:22:04,018
that her husband was
a local tire inspector,
387
00:22:04,105 --> 00:22:06,933
a family man,
a man who goes to church,
388
00:22:06,934 --> 00:22:10,024
just raising two young kids
and blending into society.
389
00:22:10,981 --> 00:22:12,853
In Mr. Rivera's case,
390
00:22:12,940 --> 00:22:15,508
there's that "inside versus
the outside" persona.
391
00:22:15,638 --> 00:22:18,249
When we're dealing
with psychopaths,
392
00:22:18,337 --> 00:22:22,036
they oftentimes will have
the skills to be a-a salesperson
393
00:22:22,166 --> 00:22:23,733
because they can sell
themselves,
394
00:22:23,820 --> 00:22:25,039
because they want
what they want,
395
00:22:25,169 --> 00:22:26,867
and they know
how to make that happen.
396
00:22:28,869 --> 00:22:32,828
At first, she just could not
believe it, couldn't accept it.
397
00:22:32,829 --> 00:22:35,005
The father of her children.
398
00:22:35,092 --> 00:22:39,488
But at the same time,
she knew he matched the sketch.
399
00:22:43,318 --> 00:22:45,014
She didn't want to believe
that her husband could be
400
00:22:45,015 --> 00:22:46,321
that kind of monster.
401
00:22:47,670 --> 00:22:48,932
The police started to dig into
402
00:22:49,063 --> 00:22:51,065
Reinaldo Rivera's
criminal history.
403
00:22:52,588 --> 00:22:55,286
They find out,
while he was working in D.C.,
404
00:22:55,374 --> 00:22:58,464
he had been accused of attacking
a 19-year-old prostitute.
405
00:22:59,726 --> 00:23:02,250
He was arrested,
but the charges was dropped
406
00:23:02,337 --> 00:23:04,165
for some unknown reason.
407
00:23:05,340 --> 00:23:07,733
And more shocking
than anything is, ultimately,
408
00:23:07,734 --> 00:23:09,300
what got him discharged
from the Navy.
409
00:23:09,431 --> 00:23:12,042
He's caught having sex
with a 16-year-old girl.
410
00:23:15,698 --> 00:23:19,093
Mr. Rivera's type seemed
to be these young women.
411
00:23:19,180 --> 00:23:22,618
Considering his age,
maybe he never really progressed
412
00:23:22,705 --> 00:23:24,228
to a state
where he was interested
413
00:23:24,315 --> 00:23:26,666
in women more his own age.
414
00:23:26,753 --> 00:23:28,971
That could have been part
of the excitement.
415
00:23:28,972 --> 00:23:32,280
That vulnerability could have
been part of his-- his drive.
416
00:23:33,760 --> 00:23:36,370
The night shift investigators
come on, and all of them,
417
00:23:36,371 --> 00:23:40,593
they're basically reeled in,
searching for Rivera.
418
00:23:40,680 --> 00:23:43,160
It was all-hands-on-deck.
419
00:23:43,247 --> 00:23:44,944
He's a flight risk
at this point.
420
00:23:44,945 --> 00:23:47,338
So we knew that clock
was ticking.
421
00:23:48,514 --> 00:23:51,473
And the only thing that mattered
at that point in time
422
00:23:51,560 --> 00:23:52,605
was finding him.
423
00:23:58,915 --> 00:24:01,527
We now had a suspect,
Reinaldo Rivera.
424
00:24:01,614 --> 00:24:04,573
He had fled in his wife's van.
425
00:24:05,618 --> 00:24:08,750
Investigators start trying
to analyze, "What would I do?
426
00:24:08,751 --> 00:24:10,536
Where would he go?"
427
00:24:10,623 --> 00:24:15,191
In conjunction with the team
that's sitting on his residence
428
00:24:15,192 --> 00:24:17,804
and is now working
with his wife,
429
00:24:17,891 --> 00:24:20,415
we set up an additional group
of people
430
00:24:20,502 --> 00:24:23,331
who are charged
with looking for this vehicle.
431
00:24:25,028 --> 00:24:27,378
We were going
almost around the clock.
432
00:24:27,466 --> 00:24:30,425
We were looking and looking
and looking and looking.
433
00:24:32,340 --> 00:24:34,646
And then,
first thing in the morning,
434
00:24:34,647 --> 00:24:37,084
one of our investigators
comes on the radio and says,
435
00:24:37,214 --> 00:24:41,175
he's got the vehicle in
the parking lot on Highway 1.
436
00:24:41,262 --> 00:24:42,568
It's unoccupied.
437
00:24:43,612 --> 00:24:46,789
The van was at the Rainbow
Motel there in Clearwater.
438
00:24:48,399 --> 00:24:52,665
We immediately got marked units
to back him up
439
00:24:52,795 --> 00:24:55,319
and go to the Rainbow hotel.
440
00:24:57,191 --> 00:25:00,934
They tracked him to the room
through the, uh, hotel clerk.
441
00:25:01,021 --> 00:25:02,544
He said, "He's just checked in.
442
00:25:02,675 --> 00:25:04,590
He's in room 6."
443
00:25:05,939 --> 00:25:07,897
They kicked in the door.
444
00:25:07,984 --> 00:25:10,596
They find him
with his wrists cut.
445
00:25:12,772 --> 00:25:15,688
They found blood everywhere
with a suicide note written.
446
00:25:17,559 --> 00:25:20,040
He is bleeding out
on the spot.
447
00:25:21,955 --> 00:25:23,564
We don't want him to die.
448
00:25:23,565 --> 00:25:25,698
We wanted to solve
these murders.
449
00:25:27,177 --> 00:25:29,310
EMS,
they get the bleeding stopped.
450
00:25:29,397 --> 00:25:32,660
We decided to send him on to
the Medical College of Georgia.
451
00:25:36,447 --> 00:25:40,277
He was now in custody
at the hospital.
452
00:25:40,364 --> 00:25:42,149
Because of his injuries,
453
00:25:42,279 --> 00:25:46,153
Reinaldo Rivera wasn't fit to
be interviewed for a few days...
454
00:25:47,371 --> 00:25:51,550
...but he wakes up,
and he just starts talking.
455
00:25:58,600 --> 00:26:01,297
He tells them
he's attacked Chrisilee Barton
456
00:26:01,298 --> 00:26:03,039
right off the bat.
457
00:26:03,126 --> 00:26:05,259
Then after that,
he tells them
458
00:26:05,346 --> 00:26:10,177
that he killed Sergeant Glista
and Tiffaney Wilson.
459
00:26:11,657 --> 00:26:14,094
So now we knew
that these were connected.
460
00:26:19,012 --> 00:26:20,753
He would pull people over
in parking lots,
461
00:26:20,840 --> 00:26:22,624
wave them down for directions.
462
00:26:22,711 --> 00:26:24,234
Then he would start saying
he was a model scout,
463
00:26:24,321 --> 00:26:26,061
that he could take
pictures of them.
464
00:26:26,062 --> 00:26:29,588
He'd offer them money,
and he'd just sweet-talk them.
465
00:26:38,597 --> 00:26:40,468
Timing is everything.
466
00:26:40,555 --> 00:26:42,643
Whatever story he was using
467
00:26:42,644 --> 00:26:44,384
and what was going on
in their lives,
468
00:26:44,385 --> 00:26:47,430
all those contribute
to how willing they were
469
00:26:47,431 --> 00:26:49,520
to take these pictures.
470
00:26:49,608 --> 00:26:53,567
In the case of Marni Glista,
he said he pitched it like,
471
00:26:53,568 --> 00:26:55,178
"Okay, well, I understand
you're married.
472
00:26:55,265 --> 00:26:56,789
Wouldn't it be nice to send,
like,
473
00:26:56,876 --> 00:26:59,618
this boudoir session
to your husband?"
474
00:27:03,883 --> 00:27:07,626
He tells them everything
about Tiffaney Wilson.
475
00:27:32,476 --> 00:27:34,652
He said he approached
Tiffaney Wilson
476
00:27:34,653 --> 00:27:37,394
and asked for directions,
and then he told her,
477
00:27:37,525 --> 00:27:40,483
"I'm a model scout.
I'll pay you to model."
478
00:27:40,484 --> 00:27:41,834
A-And that was his hook.
479
00:27:56,805 --> 00:27:59,895
Saying he wasn't going to take
pictures of them in the nude
480
00:28:00,026 --> 00:28:01,897
created more
of a sense of safety.
481
00:28:01,984 --> 00:28:04,030
It's a safe sale.
It's a good sale.
482
00:28:04,117 --> 00:28:06,815
It's what you want,
and you're gonna be happy.
483
00:28:39,587 --> 00:28:41,545
When we're dealing
with psychopaths
484
00:28:41,632 --> 00:28:43,765
who lack a sense of guilt,
485
00:28:43,852 --> 00:28:47,246
oftentimes malignant,
narcissistic psychopaths,
486
00:28:47,247 --> 00:28:49,552
they often learn that,
"I can mask,
487
00:28:49,553 --> 00:28:50,902
I can be someone else,
488
00:28:50,903 --> 00:28:52,513
and each time I do that,
489
00:28:52,600 --> 00:28:54,863
it makes it easier
for me to get what I want."
490
00:29:14,100 --> 00:29:17,319
Once Rivera got her in the van,
491
00:29:17,320 --> 00:29:20,454
even with a baby,
she was done.
492
00:29:33,815 --> 00:29:36,862
After Rivera strangled
Tiffaney Wilson,
493
00:29:36,949 --> 00:29:39,473
he drove down a dirt road,
494
00:29:39,560 --> 00:29:42,563
and he dumped the body
there in the woods.
495
00:29:44,043 --> 00:29:45,609
That was the
most disgusting part to me.
496
00:29:45,696 --> 00:29:47,436
He left her out there
just like trash,
497
00:29:47,437 --> 00:29:49,047
just dumping her body,
498
00:29:49,048 --> 00:29:51,572
throwing some leaves
and tree limbs over her.
499
00:29:59,580 --> 00:30:01,059
He panicked with the baby,
500
00:30:01,060 --> 00:30:03,540
but he knew somebody
would find it quickly
501
00:30:03,627 --> 00:30:05,586
at the Georgia Welcome Center.
502
00:30:24,039 --> 00:30:25,998
He spoke
like it was matter of fact.
503
00:30:27,303 --> 00:30:29,740
Reinaldo Rivera mentioned
that, once he started,
504
00:30:29,828 --> 00:30:34,180
there was no coming back from it
and that he couldn't stop.
505
00:30:34,267 --> 00:30:36,443
He had to submit to the urges.
506
00:30:37,836 --> 00:30:41,969
So when Mr. Rivera says he
couldn't control his behavior,
507
00:30:41,970 --> 00:30:43,014
what did he do?
508
00:30:43,015 --> 00:30:45,234
He planned. He thought ahead.
509
00:30:45,321 --> 00:30:48,847
He was able to manipulate,
understand social functioning.
510
00:30:48,977 --> 00:30:51,762
He knew exactly
what he was doing,
511
00:30:51,850 --> 00:30:56,332
and there's clearly evidence
that he had situations
512
00:30:56,419 --> 00:30:58,726
that he had gotten away with
in the past.
513
00:31:12,914 --> 00:31:16,787
He is implying that
there's more than two murders
514
00:31:16,875 --> 00:31:19,486
of Marni Glista and
Tiffaney Wilson
515
00:31:19,573 --> 00:31:22,010
that he's responsible for.
516
00:31:22,141 --> 00:31:23,969
Investigators are going,
517
00:31:24,056 --> 00:31:26,232
"Well, wait a minute.
What are you talking about?"
518
00:31:26,362 --> 00:31:28,538
It was a surprise
to all of us.
519
00:31:28,625 --> 00:31:30,149
Reinaldo Rivera
had killed women
520
00:31:30,236 --> 00:31:31,890
that they didn't
even know about?
521
00:31:39,158 --> 00:31:40,507
Reinaldo Rivera's wife,
522
00:31:40,637 --> 00:31:43,684
she was doing everything
she could to assist us
523
00:31:43,814 --> 00:31:47,079
once she found out
that he was a serial killer.
524
00:31:48,123 --> 00:31:50,472
She told Reinaldo,
"Tell the truth.
525
00:31:50,473 --> 00:31:52,301
Tell them
what really happened."
526
00:31:52,432 --> 00:31:54,694
And that's why
he treated his hospital bed
527
00:31:54,695 --> 00:31:56,523
like a confessional.
528
00:31:56,653 --> 00:31:59,787
Because of that, we get
this shocking development.
529
00:32:01,180 --> 00:32:05,010
Reinaldo Rivera said
that up until July of 1999,
530
00:32:05,097 --> 00:32:06,402
he had not killed anyone.
531
00:32:06,533 --> 00:32:08,229
He had only raped women.
532
00:32:08,230 --> 00:32:11,146
He said, "Not only
did I attack Chrisilee Barton,
533
00:32:11,233 --> 00:32:12,800
not only am I responsible
for the murder
534
00:32:12,974 --> 00:32:15,628
of Marni Glista
and Tiffaney Wilson,"
535
00:32:15,629 --> 00:32:17,413
but he confessed
to killing two women
536
00:32:17,587 --> 00:32:19,893
no one even knew about.
537
00:32:19,894 --> 00:32:23,332
Rivera, he told us
that his first victim
538
00:32:23,463 --> 00:32:26,640
was Melissa Dingess,
17 years old.
539
00:32:28,337 --> 00:32:30,426
He approached her
in the parking lot
540
00:32:30,557 --> 00:32:33,647
behind Graniteville Café.
541
00:32:33,734 --> 00:32:37,868
He was able to get Melissa
in his van,
542
00:32:37,956 --> 00:32:42,308
where she was sexually assaulted
and strangled to death.
543
00:32:43,352 --> 00:32:46,616
He said, "I'll tell you
exactly where the body was"...
544
00:32:48,792 --> 00:32:50,316
...and within minutes,
545
00:32:50,446 --> 00:32:52,230
they were able to find
that body.
546
00:32:52,231 --> 00:32:56,148
They located the body
of Melissa Dingess
547
00:32:56,278 --> 00:32:58,977
along I-20 in Aiken County.
548
00:33:00,456 --> 00:33:03,503
And then you have
Tabitha Bosdell, 17 years old.
549
00:33:05,418 --> 00:33:07,680
She goes missing.
550
00:33:07,681 --> 00:33:09,421
Reinaldo Rivera admitted
551
00:33:09,422 --> 00:33:12,599
that he's driving around
in Columbia County,
552
00:33:12,729 --> 00:33:14,514
and he picks Tabitha.
553
00:33:15,732 --> 00:33:17,386
She was approached
in a parking lot,
554
00:33:17,560 --> 00:33:19,693
and he gave her
the whole model-scout routine.
555
00:33:20,737 --> 00:33:24,871
Once he got to Tabitha
in his minivan...
556
00:33:24,872 --> 00:33:27,309
...he raped her
and killed her.
557
00:33:29,181 --> 00:33:31,356
And he ended up drawing a map,
558
00:33:31,357 --> 00:33:35,361
which led our investigators
directly to her remains.
559
00:33:36,536 --> 00:33:38,842
Tabitha Bosdell
and Melissa Dingess
560
00:33:38,973 --> 00:33:42,672
were both missing-persons cases
that had not made headlines,
561
00:33:42,846 --> 00:33:46,415
and so it really wasn't until
Reinaldo Rivera was caught
562
00:33:46,502 --> 00:33:48,417
the investigators
finally learned he was the man
563
00:33:48,548 --> 00:33:50,550
responsible for what
had happened to them.
564
00:33:51,681 --> 00:33:53,204
In fact, Reinaldo Rivera
565
00:33:53,205 --> 00:33:55,076
was happy to tell investigators
after he was caught
566
00:33:55,250 --> 00:33:57,731
what his method was
and who he liked.
567
00:34:12,789 --> 00:34:15,053
Mr. Rivera would go after
young women
568
00:34:15,183 --> 00:34:17,054
who had issues with finances
569
00:34:17,055 --> 00:34:19,318
that were, essentially, vulnerable.
570
00:34:19,492 --> 00:34:23,887
Mr. Rivera's ritual may have
involved this desire
571
00:34:24,018 --> 00:34:25,759
to feel that he was the hero
572
00:34:25,846 --> 00:34:28,021
at some point
prior to the victimization
573
00:34:28,022 --> 00:34:29,676
in terms of rape and murder,
574
00:34:29,850 --> 00:34:36,074
the desire to feel desired,
attractive to them.
575
00:34:37,118 --> 00:34:38,771
Or it could have
simply been the fact
576
00:34:38,772 --> 00:34:40,208
that they were easier targets.
577
00:34:54,744 --> 00:34:58,573
And then he spoke about
how he knew he was a sex addict
578
00:34:58,574 --> 00:35:02,100
and that he couldn't control
these sexual urges.
579
00:35:29,866 --> 00:35:32,260
He can control the plan,
the manipulation,
580
00:35:32,434 --> 00:35:35,263
can control so much,
but not the impulse to kill?
581
00:35:37,744 --> 00:35:40,138
In the end,
because of the confessions,
582
00:35:40,225 --> 00:35:43,270
we got charges on him
for abduction and rape,
583
00:35:43,271 --> 00:35:46,839
a violent, aggravated assault,
and murder
584
00:35:46,840 --> 00:35:48,842
across three different counties.
585
00:35:49,930 --> 00:35:53,151
He was admitted
to the Richmond County jail.
586
00:35:54,630 --> 00:35:57,590
I remember the day I found out
that they caught him.
587
00:35:58,591 --> 00:35:59,766
I was elated...
588
00:36:01,071 --> 00:36:03,900
...because our family could get
the closure they needed.
589
00:36:04,031 --> 00:36:05,772
And we're so thankful
to Chrisilee
590
00:36:05,859 --> 00:36:10,168
that she survived and was able
to do that composite sketch.
591
00:36:11,343 --> 00:36:12,996
I didn't think the sketch
was gonna do any good.
592
00:36:13,171 --> 00:36:16,696
I didn't think I was gonna have
him down to the "T" like I did.
593
00:36:18,393 --> 00:36:20,569
Chrisilee Barton,
in our circle,
594
00:36:20,743 --> 00:36:23,441
was definitely the hero
in this case.
595
00:36:28,838 --> 00:36:31,363
The moment the composite sketch
of Reinaldo Rivera
596
00:36:31,450 --> 00:36:32,711
went on the news,
597
00:36:32,712 --> 00:36:36,150
we got close
to 40, 45 phone calls
598
00:36:36,281 --> 00:36:38,805
of people who said,
"He tried to pick me up."
599
00:36:39,893 --> 00:36:42,721
All these victims came out of
the woodwork, basically saying,
600
00:36:42,722 --> 00:36:44,463
"Hey, this man approached me."
601
00:36:45,507 --> 00:36:47,553
People wanted to tell
their story,
602
00:36:47,683 --> 00:36:51,861
women that were thanking God
they had escaped his grasp.
603
00:36:53,733 --> 00:36:57,258
In spring of '99, I was an
18-year-old high-school senior.
604
00:36:57,345 --> 00:37:00,956
On a normal Friday afternoon
in Augusta,
605
00:37:00,957 --> 00:37:04,874
I was in the parking lot
of a shopping center,
606
00:37:05,005 --> 00:37:07,921
and that's when I crossed
paths with a serial killer.
607
00:37:15,145 --> 00:37:17,451
After Reinaldo Rivera
was arrested,
608
00:37:17,452 --> 00:37:19,889
the police department
were being overwhelmed
609
00:37:20,020 --> 00:37:23,241
with reports
of this creepy Hispanic, uh, guy
610
00:37:23,328 --> 00:37:25,982
in different vehicles
harassing young women.
611
00:37:27,114 --> 00:37:31,640
I was tasked to interview some
of the women that he approached,
612
00:37:31,727 --> 00:37:34,034
and pretty much all of them
that we interviewed
613
00:37:34,164 --> 00:37:36,254
told us stories
that are similar.
614
00:37:40,170 --> 00:37:42,129
I went to Old Navy after school
615
00:37:42,216 --> 00:37:45,437
about 15, 20 minutes
away from my home.
616
00:37:45,524 --> 00:37:47,177
Came out to the parking lot.
617
00:37:47,265 --> 00:37:50,485
A car pulled up alongside of me,
618
00:37:50,616 --> 00:37:53,749
and a clean-cut
Hispanic guy asked,
619
00:37:53,836 --> 00:37:55,751
"How do you get to
Washington Road?"
620
00:37:55,838 --> 00:37:57,274
I gave him directions,
and then he said,
621
00:37:57,275 --> 00:37:59,407
"I'm a professional
photographer.
622
00:37:59,494 --> 00:38:01,453
Have you ever thought
about being a model?"
623
00:38:02,932 --> 00:38:04,717
He gave her the
whole model-scout routine,
624
00:38:04,891 --> 00:38:07,850
trying to sweet-talk
this one particular girl.
625
00:38:07,937 --> 00:38:10,112
He said some
flattering-type things,
626
00:38:10,113 --> 00:38:12,377
but I just thought,
"This is just kind of weird."
627
00:38:13,378 --> 00:38:14,553
But, thankfully, it was like,
628
00:38:14,640 --> 00:38:16,946
"No,
I've got to get out of here."
629
00:38:17,033 --> 00:38:20,298
I got in my car,
and I drove off.
630
00:38:20,385 --> 00:38:23,344
Fast-forward
a year-and-a-half.
631
00:38:23,475 --> 00:38:25,694
I looked at the newspaper.
632
00:38:25,781 --> 00:38:29,307
Before I even read the headline,
saw the man's picture.
633
00:38:30,830 --> 00:38:34,050
That's the guy
that approached me.
634
00:38:34,181 --> 00:38:36,705
You realize
one "yes" or one "no"
635
00:38:36,836 --> 00:38:39,577
can change the trajectory
of your life
636
00:38:39,578 --> 00:38:41,493
and your family's life.
637
00:38:43,364 --> 00:38:45,453
'Cause I'm a mom now,
and I realize
638
00:38:46,846 --> 00:38:48,934
how it would have,
you know--
639
00:38:48,935 --> 00:38:50,589
I'm sorry--
640
00:38:50,676 --> 00:38:53,112
Um, how it would have affected
my-- my mom
641
00:38:53,113 --> 00:38:55,202
and my family,
642
00:38:55,333 --> 00:38:59,074
um, and how it affected
the other women's parents
643
00:38:59,075 --> 00:39:00,860
and their family,
you know?
644
00:39:09,259 --> 00:39:11,784
The Marni Glista
and Tabitha Bosdell cases
645
00:39:11,871 --> 00:39:16,179
go to trial in Richmond County,
Georgia, in January 5, 2004.
646
00:39:19,705 --> 00:39:23,709
My mom, Gloria, and
my Aunt Bonnie, my mom's sister,
647
00:39:23,796 --> 00:39:27,538
attended the whole entire trial
to see justice served for Marni
648
00:39:27,539 --> 00:39:29,541
as well as the other
young ladies.
649
00:39:31,673 --> 00:39:34,284
After three weeks
and five hours of deliberation,
650
00:39:34,372 --> 00:39:37,549
the Richmond County jury found
Reinaldo Rivera guilty.
651
00:39:39,202 --> 00:39:41,814
I felt sadness,
being in that courtroom,
652
00:39:41,944 --> 00:39:44,947
but when he was found
guilty on all charges,
653
00:39:45,078 --> 00:39:47,036
I felt a sense of relief.
654
00:39:48,516 --> 00:39:51,127
When he was sentenced
in 2004,
655
00:39:51,214 --> 00:39:54,043
Reinaldo Rivera got up
on the stand at one point.
656
00:39:55,175 --> 00:39:57,743
He actually treated it
like a confessional.
657
00:39:57,830 --> 00:39:59,658
Reinaldo Rivera told the jury,
658
00:39:59,832 --> 00:40:02,051
"If you let me out,
I'm gonna keep doing this,
659
00:40:02,138 --> 00:40:03,923
so you should give me
the death penalty."
660
00:40:06,316 --> 00:40:09,624
His attention to detail
to the horrendous crime,
661
00:40:09,798 --> 00:40:13,062
he'd almost be
lighthearted about it.
662
00:40:13,149 --> 00:40:14,716
Almost, like,
bragging about
663
00:40:14,847 --> 00:40:17,850
how he fine-tuned his craft
over the years.
664
00:40:18,938 --> 00:40:21,593
Reinaldo Rivera had
no remorse,
665
00:40:21,680 --> 00:40:24,422
no regard for human life.
666
00:40:26,206 --> 00:40:28,077
He was sentenced to death.
667
00:40:29,775 --> 00:40:31,864
There were so many people
who wanted Reinaldo Rivera
668
00:40:31,951 --> 00:40:33,518
to pay for his actions,
669
00:40:33,605 --> 00:40:36,042
and so the fact that he wanted
to be sentenced to death
670
00:40:36,129 --> 00:40:38,827
made it easier for the jury
in this case, I think,
671
00:40:38,958 --> 00:40:39,959
to return that verdict.
672
00:40:53,538 --> 00:40:55,627
A loss is never a good thing,
673
00:40:55,714 --> 00:40:58,934
especially a loss
in the prime of their lives.
674
00:40:59,892 --> 00:41:02,328
As law-enforcement officers,
675
00:41:02,329 --> 00:41:06,333
the one thing we like to do is
try and give families closure.
676
00:41:06,420 --> 00:41:09,728
And in this case,
I hope the closure that we gave
677
00:41:09,858 --> 00:41:13,079
helps a little bit
with the hurt.
678
00:41:15,560 --> 00:41:16,909
Reinaldo Rivera took away
679
00:41:16,996 --> 00:41:20,173
our bright, shining star
of a sister.
680
00:41:20,260 --> 00:41:22,349
We miss her so much.
681
00:41:25,265 --> 00:41:26,788
Since Marni's passing,
682
00:41:26,875 --> 00:41:31,097
our family has made it a point
to remember her fondly.
683
00:41:31,184 --> 00:41:35,623
Our parents made a garden
in tribute to Marni.
684
00:41:35,710 --> 00:41:37,190
I often wonder...
685
00:41:37,277 --> 00:41:38,365
what she would be doing,
686
00:41:38,452 --> 00:41:40,323
how many children
she would have,
687
00:41:40,454 --> 00:41:42,587
how successful she would be.
688
00:41:43,588 --> 00:41:45,111
That was taken from us.
689
00:41:48,157 --> 00:41:51,726
Wendy and I, we talk
about Marni all the time.
690
00:41:51,813 --> 00:41:54,990
We keep the memory
of not just Marni alive,
691
00:41:55,077 --> 00:41:57,297
but all the other girls
that suffered.
692
00:41:57,384 --> 00:42:00,126
So if I had one thing
to share--
693
00:42:00,213 --> 00:42:02,781
victims are taken away from us.
694
00:42:03,869 --> 00:42:06,611
That doesn't mean
we never get them.
695
00:42:06,698 --> 00:42:07,872
They're still with us.
696
00:42:07,873 --> 00:42:09,657
Surprise!
697
00:42:09,788 --> 00:42:11,224
Marni adds to our life
698
00:42:11,354 --> 00:42:14,967
in the memories that we get back
when we talk about her.
699
00:42:15,054 --> 00:42:18,405
She lives with us in our hearts,
in our family,
700
00:42:18,536 --> 00:42:21,669
and, some days, I believe
she's the protector now.
701
00:42:22,670 --> 00:42:24,716
Truly feel like
she watches over us.
